Biography

Thomas Sutherland joined the Film Studies department at the University of Southampton in 2024. Prior to that, he held the position of Senior Lecturer at the School of Film & Media at the University of Lincoln for eight years, where he was the Programme Leader for the MA in Media Studies and MA in Media Communications. He also taught casually at the University of Melbourne, from where he received his PhD, as well as at the Department of Media and Communication at Swinburne University of Technology. In 2016, he was a Junior Research Fellow at the Internationale Kolleg für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. His recent monograph, 'Speaking Philosophically: Communication Limits Discursive Reason', was published by Bloomsbury in 2023. Sutherland's academic interests lie at the intersection of media, cultural studies, continental philosophy, and intellectual history, particularly exploring digital cultures and critical theories. He is currently working on a project examining the varied competencies and comportments involved in creative work and has been involved in the AHRC Research Networking Scheme project 'Pause for Thought: Media Literacy in an Age of Incessant Change'. He currently acts as an external examiner for the MA Mass Communications degree at Liverpool John Moores University and has held roles examining the BA Media Communications program at Bath Spa University.
