Biography

Thomas Swerts is an Associate Professor of Urban Sociology in the Department of Public Administration and Sociology at Erasmus University Rotterdam. He joined the university in 2018 as a post-doctoral researcher and has served as a visiting professor at the University of Antwerp, Université de Liège, and KU Leuven. Swerts holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Chicago. He is a member of the Team Policy, Politics and Society, led by Professor Peter Scholten, and coordinates the Sociology Master Track in Urban Issues and Policy. His research focuses on the intersection of urban studies and migration studies, and he is currently engaged in a book project titled 'Citizen X: Becoming Undocumented Activists,' which examines the experiences of undocumented youth in Chicago and Brussels. Swerts has received funding from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) for the URBIMM project, which investigates how local migration infrastructures affect undocumented migrants in European cities. He has published in various academic journals and contributed to volumes on citizenship studies and immigrant rights mobilization. Swerts teaches courses in both Bachelor and Master programs in Sociology.
