Biography

Thomas Thymann is a professor at the University of Copenhagen specializing in Comparative Pediatrics Nutrition. His research primarily focuses on the development of animal models that mimic human conditions, particularly during critical transitional periods such as birth and weaning. This research is vital since premature birth is an increasing challenge in the western world, requiring optimized clinical care to prevent postnatal complications in vulnerable infants. His research group has developed a preterm neonatal pig model that exhibits similar health issues to those faced by premature human infants. Using this model, his studies emphasize the importance of nutritional regimens during early life, particularly how they affect morbidity and mortality rates associated with premature births. Additionally, his work addresses the challenges of weaning from mother's milk to solid food, especially in developing countries, where improper transition can lead to intestinal inflammation and increased health risks. With a robust academic background, including degrees in Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine from LIFE, Copenhagen, Thomas has also held various academic positions, advancing from assistant to full professorship, and has notable experience as a veterinary practitioner and Ph.D. student.
