Thomas Wight is an Emeritus Faculty Member at the Benaroya Research Institute and an Affiliate Professor of Pathology at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Maine and completed his PhD in Zoology at the University of New Hampshire. After postdoctoral training in the Department of Pathology at the University of Washington in Seattle, he moved back to New England to become an assistant professor of cell biology at the University of New Hampshire. He rejoined the Department of Pathology at the University of Washington in 1979 and was promoted to Full Professor in 1988. In 2004, he joined the Benaroya Research Institute to start a program in matrix biology. Dr. Wight has been recognized as an Established Investigator by the American Heart Association and has served on study sections for the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association. He is a founding member of the International Society for Hyaluronan Sciences and served as Chair of the Proteoglycan Gordon Conference in 2008. His research focuses on the role of proteoglycans in regulating cell phenotype, extracellular matrix assembly, immunity, and inflammation, with over 350 published articles on the subject. He directed the Matrix Biology Program at BRI from 2004 to 2020 and continues to delve into the mechanisms by which extracellular matrix components, particularly hyaluronan and versican, regulate immune cell phenotype and inflammation.
