Biography

Dr. Thor Stein is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. He completed his MD/PhD training at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, followed by a residency and fellowship in neuropathology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Stein focuses his research on neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). He investigates the molecular pathological mechanisms of these conditions, especially how trauma contributes to their onset and progression. His extensive publications include studies on beta-amyloid deposition, cerebral amyloid angiopathy, Lewy body disease, and TDP-43 pathology related to repetitive mild traumatic brain injury. As the Principal Investigator of numerous grants, including multiple NIH R01s, Dr. Stein examines the links between epigenetic modifications, lipidomic profiles, and cognitive decline. He also plays a crucial role in overseeing neuropathological analyses and diagnoses as the leader of the Neuropathology Core at Boston University Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.
