Biography

Professor Thor Theander is a leading expert in the field of malaria, particularly in the interactions between parasites and hosts, immunity development against malaria, and vaccine development targeting malaria proteins. His research has significantly advanced the understanding of the Plasmodium falciparum Erythrocyte Membrane Protein 1 (PfEMP1), which is crucial for malaria pathogenesis. He identified the VAR2CSA PfEMP1, responsible for placental malaria, and spearheaded the development of a vaccine based on this protein, with clinical trials initiated in Germany and Benin. Furthermore, he explored the interaction of VAR2CSA with cancer cells, suggesting its potential in cancer diagnosis and therapy. Theander's collaborations have led to the identification of specific PfEMP1 types associated with severe malaria in children and illuminated the molecular interactions that underpin the pathogenesis of the disease. As the founder and head of the Centre for Medical Parasitology at the University of Copenhagen, he oversees a large team dedicated to malaria research. His academic journey includes supervising over 50 PhD students and holding numerous prestigious research appointments. Theander has a significant portfolio of published research, focusing on malaria vaccine development and global health.
