Biography

Thorsten Erle is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Psychology at Tilburg University. His research follows the paradigm of Social Cognition, aiming to understand social phenomena by investigating the cognitive processes involved in how individuals develop empathy, particularly through means of perspective-taking. He seeks to understand the underlying mechanisms and consequences of social economic decision-making, organizational behaviors, and mental health and well-being. His work also includes exploring how emojis are used in digital text-based communications from the standpoint of social theories of emotion, low-stakes social interactions, and economic contexts such as online customer-brand interactions. Erle conducts experimental research using behavioral psychophysiological methods to uncover the mechanisms behind social cognitions, behaviors, and decisions, with funding from the German Research Foundation, European Association of Social Psychology, and Tilburg University. Alongside his research, he teaches various courses including Work Group Psychology, Experimental Research Design, and Social Cognition.
