Biography

Thy Phu is a Professor at Western University in the Department of English and Writing Studies. She completed her PhD at the University of California, Berkeley in 2003, and holds both a Master's and Bachelor's degree from McMaster University. Her research focuses on the intersections of visual studies, critical race studies, transnational American studies, and transpacific critique. Phu has authored and edited significant texts in her field, including 'Picturing Model Citizens: Civility in Asian American Visual Culture' and 'Feeling Photography.' She is currently working on a monograph titled 'Warring Visions,' which provides a new visual history of the Vietnam War through the works of Vietnamese photographers, and she leads the SSHRC-funded Family Camera Network, preserving family photos and stories. Phu has held prestigious positions including Senior Visiting Research Fellow at the Asia Research Institute at the National University of Singapore, and has been a Visiting Bicentennial Associate Professor in Canadian Studies at the MacMillan Centre at Yale University. She is a member of the College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada.
