Tianyi Peng is an Assistant Professor at the Data Science Institute of Columbia University. His research primarily focuses on artificial intelligence (AI) decision-making, exploring how future AI agents can coexist with humans while enabling complex task automation and providing decision support. His research themes encompass ensuring the safe and reliable deployment of AI agents in real-world applications, continuously aligning and adapting business and societal objectives. Moreover, he leverages AI technologies to simulate human system behavior, known as 'digital twin', which facilitates cost-effective and scalable synthetic data generation, experimentation, and testing. He is also dedicated to optimizing large-scale decision-making systems through AI reinforcement learning. Tianyi has collaborated with organizations such as Anheuser-Busch InBev, TikTok, and Liberty Mutual on innovative projects, including the development of a cutting-edge experimentation platform for Anheuser-Busch InBev that earned him the Daniel H. Wagner Prize in 2022. His scholarly contributions have been recognized through awards such as the APS Student Paper Prize and the RMP Jeff McGill Student Paper Award. He holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Tsinghua University, where he was part of the Yao Class.
