Biography

Tieyuan Zhu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geosciences at Penn State University. He holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University, obtained in 2014. His research focuses on near-surface and critical zone seismology, utilizing quantitative geophysical methods such as seismic ground-penetrating radar. He leads the Environmental Geophysics Group (EGG), dedicated to enhancing physical imaging of near-surface geological structures and their physical properties. Zhu's current projects include imaging sequestered CO2, employing fiber optics for environmental sensing, seismic wave attenuation, and Q full waveform inversion. He studies micro-earthquake source imaging and collaborates on research concerning geohazards and energy problems related to near-surface geology, particularly in the context of CO2 sequestration and geothermal exploration.
