Tigran Galstian began his studies at Yerevan State University in Armenia (formerly the Soviet Union). He obtained his master's degree (solid-state lasers) and Ph.D. (quantum electronics) from the special physics department of the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute in Russia. He has been a postdoctoral researcher in Armenia and France before relocating to Canada, where he is currently a professor and director of the Photonic Materials and Components Laboratory at Laval University in Quebec. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Liquid Crystals and Behavioral Biophotonics. His research mainly focuses on optical materials and components applied to imaging, biology, and medicine. His group studies the mechanisms of molecular self-organization and their impact on critical properties of materials, as well as their influence on the behavior of light (focusing, divergence, color), molecules (dispersal of chiral 'medical' molecules), and living microorganisms (bacteria). By 2024, he aims to have co-authored 800 scientific and popular communications, including 265 peer-reviewed articles, 51 patents granted, and 100 patents filed (in progress), along with numerous conference presentations, books, education materials, and media interactions. He is also a co-founder of three high-tech companies and collaborates closely with industry.
