Tillmann Benfey grew up in Montreal's West Island and completed a Bachelor of Science in Biology with Honours at McGill University. His research focuses on environmental factors affecting germination in freshwater sponges. A visit to the Atlantic Salmon Federation’s hatchery in Saint Andrews in 1980 ignited his passion for aquaculture, leading to graduate studies in applied fish physiology at Memorial University (MSc) and the University of British Columbia (PhD). Since joining the University of New Brunswick in 1989, he has maintained an active research and training program in fish physiology, particularly in optimizing fish performance in aquaculture. His research includes developing protocols to integrate triploid (sterile) populations in commercial salmon farming to prevent breeding with wild fish. Currently, he focuses on improving thermal hypoxia tolerance in triploid populations. Dr. Benfey collaborates extensively with research projects in Atlantic Canada, Panama, and Chile, while also providing consultancy on the safety and reproductive containment of genetically modified fish to various organizations including Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the United Nations (FAO). He has served as President of the Aquaculture Association of Canada.
