Dr. Tilman Hackeng

Biography

Tilman M. Hackeng studied Biochemistry at the University of Utrecht, obtaining his PhD in 1993. He became a postdoctoral fellow and senior researcher at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, USA, before returning to the Netherlands as a Fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has been at Maastricht University since 1998, where he has served as a professor and chair of the Department of Biochemistry. Dr. Hackeng has also chaired the Netherlands Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (NVTH) and is actively involved with the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), being a co-founder and organizer of the European Congress on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ECTH). He is currently the director of Maastricht University’s Cardiovascular Research Institute (CARIM). His research focuses on the role of blood coagulation proteins in thrombosis and cardiovascular disease, with specific emphasis on anticoagulant regulatory pathways and thrombin formation regulation. His multidisciplinary research programme employs structure-function analysis of coagulation proteins and development of clinical assays that screen for functional impairments in patients with thrombosis. Additionally, his research includes chemical protein synthesis related to thrombosis, haemostasis, cancer, targeted molecular imaging, and synthetic vaccines, utilising various advanced technologies.
