Biography

Tilman Repgen is a Professor of German Legal History, Modern Private Law History, and Civil Law at the University of Hamburg. He was born in Saarbrücken and pursued his education in Bonn, where he completed his Abitur in 1983 before studying in Trier and Cologne. He passed his First State Examination in Law in 1990 and later obtained his Second State Examination in 1994 in Düsseldorf. He earned his doctorate in 1993 and habilitation in 2000 at the University of Cologne. His research focuses on the fundamentals of civil law, especially freedom, private autonomy, and personal responsibility in both historical and contemporary contexts. He has held visiting professorships at institutions in Mainz, Tübingen, and Augsburg since 2002. Since October 1, 2010, he has also served as the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Hamburg, with a re-election in 2015. Repgen's work includes significant contributions to the history of the BGB from 1900, historical discussions on German law during the medieval and early modern periods, and the evolution of tenancy law.
