Tilmann Altwicker holds the Chair in Legal Data Science at the Faculty of Law of the University of Zurich as an Associate Professor since August 1, 2023. He is a member of the Executive Board at the Center for Legal Data Science (CLDS). His research focuses on employing data science methods to extract information from legal data, such as judgments and legislative acts. His research projects aim to identify patterns and trends in legal data to predict decisions within the legal system. Tilmann's work seeks to develop an improved understanding of the law 'in practice', test assumptions in legal theory and contribute to a stronger evidence-based approach in legal studies. He studied law and philosophy in Heidelberg and Budapest, received his doctorate in Mannheim in 2010, and was awarded a Diploma in Applied Statistics from ETH Zurich in 2017. He completed his habilitation at the University of Basel in 2018. Prior to his current role, Tilmann led an SNSF Ambizione research group at the University of Basel (2013-2017) and held an SNSF professorship at the University of Zurich (2017-2023). He has also served as a visiting professor at HSG and has been an expert on the EU COST Review Panel.
