Biography

Tim Bird joined the Defence Studies Department of King’s College London in July 2004, where he has been permanently based at the Joint Services Command and Staff College (JSCSC) in Shrivenham. He has served as the Director of the MA programme in Defence Studies and the Director of Course Design for the Advanced Command Staff Course. Currently, he acts as a Subject Matter Expert for NATO. From 2013 to 2017, he was the Dean of Academic Studies at Joaan Bin Jassim Joint Command Staff College in Qatar, where he led the KCL academic team supporting the Qatari Staff Course. He has previously taught at the University of Birmingham and the University of Warwick, focusing on themes such as Afghanistan, Counterinsurgency, Stabilisation, Foreign Security Policy, and International Security. Educated at the University of West England and Southern Illinois University, he obtained a Master's degree in Security Studies and a PhD in International Relations from the University of Birmingham. His professional experience also includes a secondment to the UK Ministry of Defence’s Development, Concepts and Doctrine Centre, where he contributed to writing the new British Joint Operational Stabilisation Doctrine. Dr. Bird has authored and co-authored several publications addressing military and international security issues.
