Tim Büthe's research examines the politics of international economic relations, focusing on the role of 'technical' standards in governing international product and financial markets, as well as health policy and consumer safety. His work addresses the causes and consequences of the rapid global diffusion of competition law and policy. Through his research, Büthe aims to advance theoretical understandings of power, stability, and change in political institutions, while providing practical insights for public policy and the private sector to resolve transnational conflicts and foster international cooperation. Büthe studied at Harvard University (BA 1995) and earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 2002. Before joining the teaching staff at the Technical University of Munich in 2016, he was an Associate Professor of Political Science and Public Policy at Duke University and has held teaching positions at Stanford University and Columbia University.
