Biography

Tim Christiaens is an assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy at Tilburg University, specializing in political philosophy, economic ethics, and the philosophy of technology. He completed his PhD in Philosophy at KU Leuven, Belgium, focusing on neoliberal governmentality through the lens of key theorists such as Michel Foucault and Giorgio Agamben. His research primarily addresses economic topics, including socio-economic exclusion, financialization, and the impacts of digitalization on work, viewing these issues through the framework of continental critical thought. He is a founding member of the Low Countries chapter of the Italian Thought Network, which promotes the study and dissemination of Italian philosophy. His doctoral work explored the genealogy of 'oikonomia' from early Christianity to Adam Smith's liberalism, examining how modern neoliberal economic concepts derive from theological sources. Currently, he is preparing a book with Rowman & Littlefield that investigates the meaning of workers' autonomy in the digital gig economy, particularly focusing on the organization of work for independent contractors within digital platform companies. He teaches courses on economic ethics and philosophy to both undergraduate and graduate students.
