Biography

Tim Frandy is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Central, Eastern, Northern European Studies at the University of British Columbia. He specializes in Nordic Studies and serves as the Director of Undergraduate Studies. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Scandinavian Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Frandy's research interests lie at the intersection of Indigenous sustainabilities, environmental stewardship, and cultural revitalization, informed by his work with Indigenous communities across five countries. He has conducted extensive ethnographic fieldwork including collaboration with Sámi reindeer herders and salmon fishermen. Notably, Frandy's scholarly contributions include the translation and editing of "Inari Sámi Folklore: Stories Aanaar," as well as co-editing the volume "Culture Work: Folklore Public Good," which was recognized in Smithsonian Magazine's Books of 2022. He is currently working on a monograph exploring Sámi environmentalism. Frandy's teaching philosophy prioritizes community-engaged learning and the decolonization of education, especially in relation to Indigenous knowledge systems.
