Biography

Tim Hochstrasser is an Associate Professor in the Department of International History at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He studied at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he gained his degrees from Cambridge University. He has worked in teaching and research capacities at Downing College, Cambridge, and Keble College, Oxford, and has held a British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellowship. His research focuses on the two-way relationship between intellectual life and political action in early modern Europe, particularly examining how contemporary historical and philosophical writing was used to legitimate and defend changing concepts of sovereignty and political structure. A major case study for his research is the European Enlightenment (approximately 1680-1830), with a particular focus on France and Germany. His work has developed linked pathways, including the development of natural law discourse in the early German Enlightenment, which has provided the focus for his book. He explores the scope and limits of eighteenth-century cosmopolitanism and continues work on the Huguenot Diaspora, examining the interface between political economy and practical politics in France during the era of the French Revolution. Dr. Hochstrasser teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in early modern history, enlightenment, and intellectual history.
