Biography

Tim Iles is an Associate Professor in Pacific and Asian Studies at the University of Victoria, with a focus on Asian cinema, particularly Japanese literature and film. He holds a PhD from the University of Toronto, where he wrote a dissertation exploring avant-garde novelist Abe Kōbō. Iles has published numerous analytical articles and books on thematic problems in film, particularly Japanese cinema. He is also the General Editor of an online journal on contemporary Japanese studies, which features film and book reviews, as well as essays. His teaching interests include Japanese literature, culture, and cinema, and he has developed several undergraduate courses that introduce students to the complexities of premodern and modern Japanese culture. Iles’ research interests revolve around narrative forms and the thematic issues present in cinema and literature, addressing concepts such as humanism, identity, and societal change in Japan.
