Biography

Tim Kovachy is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Northwestern University. He earned his PhD from Stanford University in 2016. His research focuses on atom interferometers which utilize the quantum mechanical wavelike properties of massive particles to make precise measurements of fundamental quantities such as accelerations and rotations. This work is valuable for a wide range of fundamental physics tests and practical applications. Kovachy's group develops advanced techniques involving ultracold atoms to enhance the sensitivity of atom interferometers. Current projects include searching for new physics beyond the Standard Model and realizing improved quantum sensors. He is part of the Mid-band Atomic Gravitational Wave Interferometric Sensor (MAGIS) collaboration, contributing to the development of a 100-meter-tall atom interferometer designed to serve as a prototype for gravitational wave detection. Furthermore, he engages in dark matter searches and is involved with the Northwestern Center for Fundamental Physics at Low Energy.
