Biography

Tim Minshull is a marine geophysicist specializing in the application of a variety of geophysical techniques to study processes occurring on the ocean floor. His research interests cover continental breakup, the onset of seafloor spreading, and the role of methane hydrates in the Earth system. He has been involved in significant research projects, including a £4 million initiative focusing on 3D seismic work on the west Iberia margin, which has provided unprecedented insights into the tectonic processes underlying continental breakup. Tim’s ongoing research also examines the dissociation of methane hydrates offshore Svalbard in response to ocean warming and the role that microbes may play in modulating gas escape from the seafloor. He employs high-resolution seismic and controlled source electromagnetic techniques to study fluid flow and escape structures in the North Sea and leads various projects that investigate the evolution of magmatism and the dynamics of fluid transport processes beneath active volcanic systems.
