Dr. Tim Newburn

Biography

Tim Newburn is a Professor of Criminology at the London School of Economics and Political Science, specializing in Criminology and Social Policy. He has held significant roles in the academic community, including Head of the Department of Social Policy from 2010 to 2013 and Director of the Mannheim Centre for Criminology from 2003 to 2009. Prior to his tenure at LSE, he served as the Joseph Rowntree Professor of Urban Social Policy at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he also directed the Public Policy Research Unit. His career includes positions at the University of Leicester, Home Office Research and Planning Unit, National Institute for Social Work, and Policy Studies Institute. With a prolific output, he has authored over 40 books, contributing significantly to criminology literature with titles including 'Future Policing', 'Private Security and Public Policing', and 'Policy Transfer in Criminal Justice'. His research interests encompass a range of areas including policing, restorative justice, youth justice, and comparative policy-making. Notably, he was President of the British Society of Criminology from 2005-2008 and has been elected to the Academy of Learned Societies in the Social Sciences in 2005. He continues to supervise doctoral studies focused on criminal justice policy and is involved in notable research projects related to urban violence and public disorder.
