Dr. Tim Walsh

Biography

Tim Walsh is a professor of Anaesthesia, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine at the Usher Institute, University of Edinburgh. He leads the Edinburgh Critical Care Research Group, focusing on developing clinically focused research programs. His academic journey began with training in anaesthesia and critical care in Edinburgh, progressing to an MD thesis centered on oxygen transport metabolism, liver failure, and transplantation. Appointed as a consultant anaesthetist with NHS Lothian in 1999, he has emphasized pragmatic clinical trials and epidemiology throughout his career. Walsh was awarded an Honorary Professorship at Edinburgh University in 2007 and became the Chair of Critical Care there in 2010. His research interests include blood transfusion, recovery from critical illness, and sedation management in ICUs. He collaborates with multiple groups at the University, including projects in novel lung imaging and inflammation biology. As a strategic leader in various healthcare research committees, he advocates for multidisciplinary research that prioritizes patient-centered outcomes.
