Biography

Timothy Bayne is a philosopher with a primary focus on the nature of consciousness, cognitive science, and the measurement of consciousness. Currently a Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Monash University, he has previously taught at Macquarie University, the University of Western Ontario, the University of Manchester, and the University of Oxford. His notable publications include "Unity Consciousness" (2010), "Thought: A Short Introduction" (2013), and he has served as the editor for several works including "Delusion and Self-Deception" (2008) and "The Oxford Companion to Consciousness" (2009). His current research interests encompass the nature of conscious thought and the taxonomy of consciousness disorders within psychiatry. Bayne is also a member of the CIFAR Brain, Mind and Consciousness program and has led projects aimed at developing methods for measuring consciousness, including an ambitious framework for building a consciousness meter. He has received various accolades, including the Faculty of Arts Dean’s Research Award from Monash University in 2021.
