Biography

Timothy Buschman is a Professor at the Princeton Neuroscience Institute and the Department of Psychology at Princeton University. His research focuses on the center of rational behavior and executive control, emphasizing how the brain internally guides actions towards goals. The laboratory investigates the complex cognitive behaviors arising from interactions between brain regions, particularly the prefrontal cortex, parietal cortex, and basal ganglia. By employing a multidisciplinary approach, Buschman’s lab utilizes advanced techniques in both non-human primate and rodent models to design behavioral tasks aimed at isolating cognitive functions associated with executive control. This research combines large-scale, multiple-electrode electrophysiology with optogenetic control of neural circuits to enhance understanding of the network-level mechanisms behind cognitive behaviors. The lab aims to decipher the fundamental functions of cognition, with aspirations to understand and eventually treat disruptions in executive control associated with neuropsychiatric diseases such as autism, schizophrenia, and neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson's disease.
