Biography

Timothy Cheek is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of British Columbia, focusing on modern Chinese history and the Chinese Communist Party. He holds a Ph.D. in History from Harvard University (1986), as well as an M.A. in History from the University of Virginia (1980) and a B.A. in Asian Studies from the Australian National University (1978). Cheek has been a co-director of the Centre for Chinese Research at the Institute of Asian Research. His recent research and teaching interests include the role of Chinese intellectuals in the history of the Chinese Communist Party, public life in China, and historical perspectives on ideological governance. He is currently involved in collaborative translation projects, particularly focusing on PRC scholarship, and has published numerous works on the subject. He was recognized as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2023 and has taught various courses related to Chinese intellectual history and revolutionary movements.
