Dr. Timothy Cheek

Biography

Timothy Cheek is a distinguished professor at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, specializing in voice and opera. He joined the faculty in 1994, where he has served as music director for the Opera Workshop and teaches classes in lyric diction. Cheek's expertise extends internationally; he has coached and performed in 18 countries and is a regular faculty member at the Moravian Master Class in the Czech Republic. He holds a Doctorate in Collaborative Piano and Chamber Music from the University of Michigan and completed his degrees in piano performance at Oberlin Conservatory and the University of Texas at Austin. Cheek's contributions to vocal education include the publication of the book 'Singing Czech' and the educational DVD on Italian lyric diction. He has received the Fulbright Award and organized a festival celebrating the works of Czech composer Vítězslava Kaprálová. His performances have been praised internationally, and he maintains a strong research interest in Czech vocal music, having performed and recorded the work of Czech composers throughout his career.
