Biography

Timothy Hyde is a historian of architecture whose research focuses on the political dimensions of architecture from the eighteenth century to the present, with particular attention to the relationships between architecture and law. His recent book, 'Ugliness Judgment: Architecture in the Public Eye' (Princeton University Press, 2019), explores episodes in aesthetic debates surrounding architecture and ugliness in Great Britain over the past centuries, revealing how architectural discourse has participated in legal formulations and social techniques within modern cities. He is also the author of 'Constitutional Modernism: Architecture and Civil Society in Cuba, 1933-1959' (University of Minnesota Press, 2012), which examines the entanglements of architecture, planning, and law leading up to the promulgation of the new Cuban constitution in 1940. Hyde is a founding member of the Aggregate Architectural History Collaborative and serves as an editor for their publication 'Governing Design'. His writings on modern architecture and architectural theory have been published on the Aggregate website and in notable journals such as Log, El Croquis, the Journal of Architecture, the Journal of Architectural Education, arq: Architecture Research Quarterly, and Thresholds. He was a Clark/Oakley Humanities Fellow at the Clark Art Institute and Williams College in 2020-21, and has been supported by grants from the Graham Foundation, the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, and the Huntington Library. Hyde received his BA from Yale University, MArch from Princeton University, and PhD from Harvard University.
