Dr. Timothy Liau

Biography

Timothy Liau is an Assistant Professor in Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science. His main research interests include remedies, contracts, unjust enrichment, and foundational questions related to private law's basic concepts and structure. His work has been cited by apex courts in Australia and Singapore, and he has contributed to leading practitioner treatises such as Goff & Jones on Unjust Enrichment and Chitty on Contracts. His book, Standing Private Law, won the Society of Legal Scholars' Peter Birks prize in 2024. Prior to joining LSE, he was an Assistant Professor at the National University of Singapore and has held a Stipendiary Lecturer position at Merton College, University of Oxford. He has taught various law courses, including Commercial Remedies. Liau is also an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow and an Associate Academic Fellow in legal theory at the National University of Singapore. He is a top graduate from NUS, having received the Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medal, and studied law at the University of Oxford as a Clarendon Scholar. His interests further encompass topics on contractual interpretation, specific performance, and the distinctive concept of standing in private law.
