Biography

Timothy Power is a Professor of Latin American Politics at St Antony's College, University of Oxford. He is currently the Head of the Social Sciences Division. His academic career includes a joint appointment at the Department of Politics and International Relations and the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies. Power initiated the Brazilian Legislative Survey in 1990, collaborating with Cesar Zucco Jr at the Fundação Getúlio Vargas in Rio de Janeiro. He co-authored a book based on a multi-year, ESRC-funded research project titled 'Coalitional Presidentialism in Africa, Latin America, and Post-communist Europe,' focused on executive-legislative relations in new democracies. Power served as the Director of Graduate Studies in Politics from 2012 to 2014 and has held positions as Treasurer of the Latin American Studies Association and President of the Brazilian Studies Association. He is the associate editor of the Journal of Politics in Latin America and serves on the editorial boards of Comparative Political Studies and Political Behavior. His research interests include democratization, presidentialism, and comparative political institutions, particularly in Latin American and Brazilian politics. Power teaches MPhil courses including Comparative Government and Comparative Presidentialism and offers a course focused on Brazil that is open to students across the department.
