Professor Timothy Schmidt is the Head of the School of Chemistry at the University of New South Wales, specializing in theoretical and experimental research in ultrafast spectroscopy and astrochemistry. He received his Bachelor of Science with Honors from the University of Sydney in 1998, where he was awarded the University Medal, and completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge in 2002, focusing on femtosecond spectroscopy under the supervision of Dr. Gareth Roberts. Following his PhD, he worked as a postdoctoral research associate with Professor John Paul Maier in Basel, Switzerland, where he researched highly unsaturated hydrocarbon molecules of astrophysical relevance. In 2003, Professor Schmidt returned to Australia to work at CSIRO on artificial photosynthesis. He became a lecturer at the University of Sydney in 2004, advanced to Associate Professor, and joined UNSW in 2014 as a Professor and ARC Future Fellow. He is also the UNSW Research Director for the School of Chemistry and a Chief Investigator of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Exciton Science.
