Tim Sumner obtained his degree in Physics from Sussex University in 1974 and completed his DPhil in Experimental Physics between Sussex University and the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, focusing on an experiment to search for the electric dipole moment of the neutron using ultra-cold neutrons. In 1979, he moved to Imperial College, where he joined the Cosmic-Ray Space Physics group, working on high-energy gamma-ray astronomy instrumentation. He became local project manager for the ROSAT x-ray satellite launched in 1990. Subsequently, as the group evolved into the Astrophysics group, he initiated research into direct dark matter searches and contributed significantly to projects like the UK Dark Matter Collaboration and the ZEPLIN-III dark matter search from 2000 to 2011. He has been involved in various high-impact experiments with world-leading results, including work with the LUX and LUX-ZEPLIN projects, and was part of the LISA International Science Team since the early conception of the LISA gravitational wave observatory mission. He has also contributed to ESA missions, including GAUGE, and served as a Senior Lecturer, Reader, and eventually Professor of Experimental Astrophysics.
