Biography

Tina Wilson is an Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia's School of Social Work. Her research focuses broadly on the history and philosophy of social work and social welfare, particularly examining how social movements inform and shape understandings of well-being, social progress, and justice. Prior to her academic career, she spent 15 years in direct practice in Toronto, Canada, where she worked primarily in the homeless shelter system, engaging in staff training and program evaluation, as well as network and social movement organizing. In her teaching and research, Wilson investigates questions relating to generational standpoint in social work, the evolution of welfare systems, and the challenges faced by social work in upholding its social justice mandate. Her current projects include a historiography of settler Canadian social work and examining the interplay between the natural environment and the profession's early development. Additionally, she collaborates on critical disability peer support research and co-convenes a special interest group affiliated with the European Social Work Research Association.
