Biography

Dr. Ting Zhu is a Professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He began his tenure at Georgia Tech in 2005 as an Assistant Professor, having previously served as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University. His research centers on the modeling and simulation of mechanical behavior in materials at nano and macroscale levels. He addresses significant scientific questions, including the understanding of material failure due to the interplay of mechanical and chemical effects. His work investigates the atomistic mechanisms that govern brittle to ductile transitions in crystals, and explores how the introduction of nano-sized twins can significantly enhance the rate sensitivity of nano-crystals. Additionally, Dr. Zhu examines the impact of domain structures on the reliability of ferroelectric ceramics and thin films. By employing a variety of modeling techniques such as molecular dynamics simulations, reaction pathway sampling, and finite-element methods, his goal is to make materials modeling predictive enough to assist in the design of new materials with improved performance and reliability.
