Biography

Ting Zhu is the Carter N. Paden, Jr. Distinguished Chair and Woodruff Professor at the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering. He joined the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2005 as an Assistant Professor after completing postdoctoral research at Harvard University. His research encompasses the mechanics of materials, focusing on the mechanical properties, deformation mechanisms, and multiscale modeling of advanced structural and energy materials. Dr. Zhu conducts modeling and simulations using atomistic and continuum multiscale methods. His main research goals involve understanding and designing materials that exhibit superior mechanical performance. Recent projects led by his group include exploring the mechanics of ultra-strength materials, studying 3D-printed metal alloys, investigating electrode degradation in lithium-ion batteries, analyzing strengthening mechanisms in high-entropy alloys, and addressing fracture in 2D materials, as well as irradiation damage in nuclear materials and hydrogen embrittlement in alloys. He has received several accolades for his work, including the Young Investigator Medal from the Society for Engineering Science in 2014 and the Sia Nemat-Nasser Early Career Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2013.
