Biography

Tiona Nekkia McClodden is a visual artist, filmmaker, and curator whose work addresses critical issues at the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and social commentary. With an interdisciplinary approach, her practice spans documentary film, experimental video, sculpture, and sound installations. McClodden's artistic exploration often delves into themes of re-memory and narrative, as well as biomythography. Her works have been featured in prestigious venues including the Institute of Contemporary Art-Philadelphia, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitney Museum, Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, MOCA in Los Angeles, MCA Chicago, and MoMA PS1. She is a recipient of the 2021-2023 Princeton Arts Fellowship and the Bucksbaum Award, and her work was part of the 2019 Whitney Biennial. In 2017-2018, she curated the multi-artist retrospective 'Julius Eastman: Fundamental' at the Slought Foundation in Philadelphia and the Kitchen in New York. McClodden's writings have been featured in various publications including Triple Canopy, Artforum, Cultured Magazine, and ART 21 Magazine. She is also the Founder and Director of a Philadelphia-based micro-gallery and library space, Conceptual Fade, which centers on Black thought and artistic production.
