Biography

Tirone E. David is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto and the holder of the Melanie Munk Chair of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. With a prolific academic output, he has published 365 scientific papers, along with contributions to 35 chapters in medical textbooks and four surgical textbooks. Dr. David is renowned for developing numerous operative procedures to treat heart valve disease and complications related to myocardial infarction and thoracic aneurysms, including the well-known 'David operation'. He serves as a member of the editorial board of several medical journals and is recognized as an honorary member of various surgical medical societies including the European Cardio-Thoracic Association and Brazilian Cardiovascular Society. Additionally, he was elected an honorary member of the Brazilian National Academy of Medicine in 2013 and served as President of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery from 2004 to 2005. Among his accolades, he received the Scientific Achievement Award in 2016 and was honored with the Order of Ontario in 1993 and the Order of Canada in 1996, the highest civilian honors in Canada. Dr. David’s clinical interests include heart valve surgery and thoracic aortic surgery, and his research focuses on clinical outcomes of operative procedures and clinical trials.
