Tjeerd van Staa studied medicine and received his degree in 1987 from Erasmus University of Rotterdam, Netherlands. After several years as a practising physician, he joined the pharmaceutical industry as an epidemiologist and became a European Qualified Person in Drug Safety. In that time, he obtained an MSc in Epidemiology from McGill University, Canada, and was awarded a PhD in Pharmacoepidemiology from Utrecht University in 1999. He served as the Director of Research at the Clinical Practice Research Datalink from 2006 to 2014. In 2014, he became a Professor of Health eResearch at the Farr Institute of Manchester University. He has published over 170 peer-reviewed articles and is a well-recognized speaker in the fields of pragmatic trials, pharmacoepidemiology, and pharmacovigilance in osteoporosis. He has received various academic affiliations including with Utrecht University, Netherlands; Medical Research Council, Southampton; and London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. He is the recipient of the 2005 Iain Boyle Award from the European Calcified Tissue Society for significant contributions to bone disease research.
