Biography

Tobi Ashiru is a creative problem solver and a leader in design, striving to push the boundaries of creativity. Born in Nigeria and raised in South Africa, she seeks to create contextually relevant work that celebrates blackness. Tobi is a multi-hyphenate creative with diverse experiences as an architectural designer, installation artist, educator, and business owner. She is committed to advancing underrepresented voices through Poché Design Studio, a black woman-owned design agency she co-founded with the mission of amplifying black space in design. Currently, Tobi teaches a workshop course focusing on architecture, designed for both architecture minors and non-architecture majors. The course involves project-based laboratories that include drawing and model-making, allowing students to develop essential architectural vocabulary and technical skills. Through this course, Tobi engages students in the processes of architecture and encourages participation and collaboration within the classroom environment.
