Biography

Tobias Hof is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and the Department of Germanic Languages & Literature at the University of Toronto. He previously held the position of Privatdozent in Modern History at Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich and the Hannah Arendt Visiting Chair of German European Studies at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy during the academic year 2022/2023. His research interests include the history of terrorism, counterterrorism, violence, fascism, and humanitarian aid. He has authored several publications, including 'Staat und Terrorismus Italien 1969-1982' (Oldenbourg, 2011) and 'Galeazzo Ciano: Fascist Pretender' (University of Toronto Press, 2021), along with a comprehensive work titled 'Geschichte des Terrorismus von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart' (UTB, 2022). Hof has taught at various institutions, including the University of Munich and Washington University in St. Louis, and has contributed to the online journal Fair Observer. His current research projects investigate global emergency aid in Ethiopia during the 1970s and 80s and explore the influence of popular fantasy in science fiction within the far-right milieu, alongside themes of global right-wing terrorism.
