Biography

Tobias Lanz, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Immunology and Rheumatology at Stanford University. His research focuses on B cell biology, neuroimmunological diseases, and the neurological manifestations of rheumatic diseases. He employs high-throughput screening technologies and structural cell biology methods to identify new autoantigens and understand the mechanisms through which self-reactive B cells can escape tolerance. Dr. Lanz is particularly interested in the molecular mechanisms that explain the association of Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) with autoimmunity. He began his medical training at Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen, Germany, and pursued a doctoral thesis under Dr. Michael Platten at the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research before joining Stanford University as a research scholar in Dr. Lawrence Steinman’s laboratory. His recent work has characterized the B cell repertoire in spinal fluid from multiple sclerosis patients and identified the molecular mimicry between EBV EBNA1 and the glial cellular adhesion molecule GlialCAM as a driver of neuroinflammation. Dr. Lanz aims to leverage these mechanistic insights to develop next-generation biomarkers and therapeutics for autoimmune diseases.
