Biography

Tobias Sperlich is an Associate Professor at the University of Regina in the Department of Anthropology, where he also serves as the Interim Dean of the Faculty of Arts. His research interests include Polynesia, particularly Samoa and New Zealand, and museum ethnography. He conducts ethnographic research in Oceania and focuses on the uses of material culture, art, and photography within these regions. His work is particularly concerned with the changing meanings of objects and images as they move between indigenous Polynesian and Western systems of knowledge and interpretation. Sperlich has initiated research in small town museums within settler communities of Southern Saskatchewan, exploring the role of material culture in museum spaces and its capacity to challenge the ongoing colonial narratives in Saskatchewan. He teaches courses in Ethnology of Polynesia, Anthropology of Art, Visual Anthropology, Material Culture Consumption, Museum Ethnography, and Theory of Anthropology.
