Biography

Dr. Ulmer received his PhD from the University of Oxford after completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Zurich. Following his postdoctoral work at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), he established his research group at the University of Southern California (USC). His research program focuses on elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying physiological functions and pathological dysfunctions during biological processes at atomic resolution. Specifically, he studies the three-dimensional structure of proteins and the dynamics of protein-protein and protein-lipid interactions. The principal research tool employed in his work is high-resolution, multidimensional solution-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. He is particularly interested in structural biology, especially in the context of membrane-bound proteins. His lab concentrates on understanding the structural basis of transmembrane signaling of cell surface receptors, as well as the regulation mechanisms of carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1.
