Dr. Toby Campbell

Biography

Toby Campbell, MD, MS is a thoracic medical oncologist specializing in Hematology, Medical Oncology, and Palliative Care at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He holds the Ellen Peter O. Johnson Chair in Palliative Care and is recognized for his leadership in developing innovative palliative care programs. Dr. Campbell served as the Fellowship Program Director for Hospice Palliative Medicine Fellowship from 2010 to 2017, advancing the program to national standards of excellence. He has received several honors for his contributions to the field, including the 2014 Sojourns Scholar Leadership Award and Young Investigator Awards from the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer. His clinical practice focuses on lung cancer, symptom management, and communication in the context of palliative care. Dr. Campbell’s research interests include communication education, empathy, high-risk shared decision-making, and models for implementing palliative care. His work has been published in several prominent journals including the Journal of the American Medical Association, JAMA Surgery, and Annals of Surgery.
