Dr. Toby Richards

Biography

Professor Toby Richards holds the Lawrence Brown Chair in Vascular Surgery at the University of Western Australia (UWA) and is the Head of the Division of Surgery. He is also the Director of the Clinical Trials Unit at UWA. An Honorary Professor at University College London and Monash University, he has supervised 16 PhD students and 60 graduate research projects. Professor Richards has led several international clinical trials, actively engaging in networks such as the International VASCC and the UK VERN Research Group. With more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and approximately $14 million in research funding over the last decade, his research primarily focuses on collaborative studies involving medical students and junior doctors. He is the founder and director of STRIVEwa, a pan-WA student network comprising 130 GCP trained medical students. Recently, Richards led efforts to develop a platform for COVID-related research across five metropolitan health care systems in Western Australia. He has been a prominent speaker at 75 international conferences in the last five years and serves on several boards related to clinical trials and patient blood management. Professor Richards is active in promoting quality collaborations and enhancing support for clinical trials at UWA.
