Biography

Tom Bartlett is a Professor of Functional Applied Linguistics at the University of Glasgow, with extensive experience teaching English across the UK, Europe, North America, and Latin America. Before joining Glasgow in 2019, he held a professorship in Language and Communication at Cardiff University. His research interests lie at the intersection of language and social phenomena, particularly through the lenses of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). He has published works on community management and the discourse of sustainability, including the Routledge Handbook of Systemic Functional Linguistics (2017) and Analysing Power in Language: A Practical Guide (2014). Bartlett has supervised numerous PhD students focusing on diverse topics such as linguistic approaches to gender and climate change discourse. He teaches on MSc modules related to applying linguistics in social and professional contexts.
