Biography

Thomas joined Macquarie University in 2017 and holds a PhD in Japanese Studies from Monash University. He is a cultural anthropologist whose work has explored consumption, popular culture, and queer communities in Japan, Mainland China, Thailand, and the Philippines. His research notably examines the transnational spread of Japanese queer popular culture and its impact on conceptualizations of gender and sexuality. Additionally, he investigates K-pop fandom in Japan and Australia, focusing on ethnographic studies. Fluent in English, Japanese, and French, he has engaged in exploring the nexus of East and Southeast Asian popular culture, particularly the development of pan-Asian celebrity-related fan cultures. Some of his current projects include an ethnographic study of the Japanese gay media landscape, the globalization of queer Japanese popular culture, and the dynamics of K-pop fandom among queer individuals.
