Biography

Tom Beghin is a leading fortepianist and artistic researcher known for his eloquence and originality. He coedited the book 'Haydn Performance Rhetoric', which won the 2009 Ruth Solie Award from the American Musicological Society. His monograph 'Virtual Haydn: Paradox of the Twenty-First-Century Keyboardist' was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2015, following a series of recordings that include a complete solo Haydn (Naxos 2009/2011). An alumnus of the historically informed performance doctoral program at Cornell University, Beghin taught at UCLA from 2003 before becoming an Associate Professor at McGill University's Schulich School of Music. He is also the principal investigator of the research cluster at the Orpheus Institute in Ghent, Belgium, focusing on intersections of historical performance technologies. His current projects explore multi-sensory interpretations of Beethoven's piano sonatas and delve into the historical context of eighteenth and nineteenth-century performance. Beghin has performed at various prestigious early music festivals and collaborated with leading orchestras and ensembles across Europe and North America. He is recognized for his expertise in historical performance and has been invited to give concerts and workshops internationally.
